Tradition of Christmas Candles

While today, Christmas candles are largely bought for gifting and décor, in the Victorian era, people used to decorate Christmas trees with candles. Going back even longer in history – Romans, during their Saturnalia festival, gifted candles to guests and offered candles to Saturn as well.
The Pagans used candles in their Yule festivities as a symbol of light and to mark the coming of a new beginning. In some parts of the Europe, the ancient tradition of placing the candles on windows still continues. In earlier days, this was done to help the Christ child wander from place to place on Christmas Eve.
The tradition of Christmas candles still continues, although the way it is done might have changed over time. Besides gifting and décor, Christmas candles are also used at the time of offering prayers and singing carols in churches. Candles at Church

Why do Catholics light candles at church?
Dear Inquirer,
Thanks for the question. We light candles during official church services (called liturgy, such as Mass) to indicate the special solemnity of the occasion.
Perhaps you are also referring to those stands which have small banks of candles which people can light (usually within small glass containers, colored or not, and often called "vigil lights"). Often you can find them near a statue or icon of Mary. These are called votive candles and indicate that someone is praying about something particular, either for themselves or on behalf of someone else. The word "votive" can also refer to a promise to pray for someone, as well as a wish or desire for a certain outcome on behalf of someone, such as recovery of health.

How Do I Calculate the Burn Time of a Candle

Before lighting the candle, use a scale to weigh it and find its total weight. Then light and let burn for 3 hours (assuming it's a 3 inch diameter candle). Weigh the candle again. Now you can calculate the burn rate. For example, if you have a 16 oz candle to begin with, and after 3 hours of burning it weighs 15.5 oz, then that means it burned .5 oz in 3 hours. Split that in 3, so in 1 hour .16 oz burned away. Now take your original total weight (16) and divide that by you’re per hour burn rate (.16). This would give you a total burn time of approximately 100 hours.

Note: Another guideline to remember is that a standard 2 ounce sized votive candle mold is rated as a 15 hour votive mold by the manufacturers. Divide by 2 and that would mean that each ounce should burn for about 7.5 hours. This can vary and will greatly depend on your formula, but you can use this as a goal to aim for.

Candle Burning Tips

1. Always trim wick to 1/4 inch before lighting candle.
2. Burning candles no longer than 3 to 4 hours at a time will increase total burn time.
3. Large diameter candles should be burned no longer than 2 hours at a time. This helps keep the sides intact, allowing the candle to glow from within.
4. If a candle burns unevenly it is in a draft. Rotate the candle 90 degrees periodically to keep burning uniform, or move to another location.
5. A teaspoon of water in the bottom of votive cups will help prevent overheating and ease removal of spent candle.
6. Snug a loose fitting taper in its socket by wrapping bottom of candle with tin foil. Never use a flammable material for this.
7. Container candles (jar candles, votives in holders, etc...) should be burned 1 hour for each inch of diameter. This allows the wax pool to cover the entire surface, and extends the burning time. 8. Refrigerating candles for a few minutes before burning extends burning time. Care must be taken since refrigerating for too long may cause cracks in the candle.
9. The life of large candles may be extended by placing a votive inside once the burn hole is deep enough. The votive can be wrapped in tin foil to ease removal.
